Hate me all you want, it's still true [29 Oct 2005|09:47pm]

Tonight was a nice show, but we didnt deserve the win. People were out of step, there were several musical tears, the pit stayed together (but not with the band), the closer rushed in spots, the ballad was shakey, so on, so forth. I personally dont care if we win or lose, but most of the rest of the band does. So, I'll say this. Don't be upset if you lose if you don't try to win. If you want to win, earn it. Practice was absolutly TERRIBLE these last few weeks. And frankly, we didnt deserve to win. You think North Penn's practiced sucked that much? You think Green Hope's practice sucked that much?
Then there's the matter of North Penn. To every member of the band who said, "let's beat North Penn" or "I dont care if we get 10th, if North Penn is 11th Im happy" or something along those lines, get your head out of your ass. During my 3 years as a member of the pride of Herndon, every single time we focus on beating one band, we dont only lose to that band, we lose to others as well.
Examples:
2003-JMU-Chantilly (3rd, 4th or 5th, cant remember)
2004-JMU-Chantilly (4th)
2004-Baltimore-Hickory (2nd in Virginia, 3rd overall, North Penn beat both us and Hickory)
2005-Baltimore-North Penn (3rd)
Don't even try to deny it. If you wanna do well, dont get caught up in the thought of revenge. From where I stood in the band, when NP's score was announced, I could only see 1 other person even clapping. You know what band that reminds me of? Chantilly. Do you wanna be assholes like Chantilly, and celebrate when rivals lose?

You guys need to fucking lighten up. ITS BAND. THAT'S IT. WE LOST, SO WHAT, GET OVER IT. IT WONT ALTER YOUR LIFE IN ANY SIGNIFICANT WAY WHETHER WE WIN OR LOSE. Your not gonna get into a better college cus you beat North Penn. You wont land some high paying job cus you were in a band that won a USSBA show. And, yes, I know what it's like to win something. Im not just speaking from the point of view of a loser. I've been a world champion, and I love the thrill and feeling of being the best. But it's not something to obsess over. You'll end up in more pain when you stumble and fall if you set your goal too high.

Bottom line is:
If band is a ladder, we need to advance up rung by rung. Tonight we tried to reach the top, and we fell to the ground. And that's what we deserved because we didn't go up rung by rung during practice. If our goal is to win, we need to earn it. Now put up, or shut up.

It's kind of funny to look back and remember how much we all hated this show last year... now everyone is like in love with it.

note from mrs.Yuras [10 Oct 2005|02:49pm]

mustanglvr4life
Just wanted to take a minute to tell you what amazing kids you all have. This morning, they arrived in the rain ready to go. They warmed up inside in a totally different manner than usual, then they played the show through in the auditorium, checked on to the buses differently than usual, dragged more stuff than usual on to the buses and were ready, willing and able to go in record time with this incredible collective positive attitude despite the pouring rain. Mr. Bergman received the call from BOA after the kids had boarded the buses and without telling them why, we asked them to come back in to the auditorium. When Chuck announced that that BOA had cancelled their first show in the history of BOA, one student shouted out "Let's go anyway" to which the rest of the kids cheered and clapped. That is the kind of enthusiasm and dedication that makes us happy to be the Chaperone and Trip Coordinators for these Band kids.

I wish everyone had had the opportunity to hear them play their show through in the auditorium this morning also. Directed with intense emotion by Drum Major Chris Smith, they played in the round (Tag Day style) and played so well that they about blew the new roof off of the auditorium. They were truly "on" !!! As the Directors told them, there is no doubt, they would have made the BOA finals.

We would like to thank all the Chaperones, and Pit and Prop Crew parents that came out in the rain and planned to see the day through no matter what. Your dedication and flexibility is truly appreciated.

A few people deserve some extra kudos--Kathy Bentley for meeting the SAT students at 7a.m and gathering all of their belongings and instruments and taking them home and getting them back for the buses; Carol Lavery and Dave Simenauer for spending Friday night at Harris Teeter in the produce department filling the ice chests ( was it 10 of them??), Joanne Skinner for picking up and delivering all of the subs; Jackie Leventhal and Kathy Cookson for accepting their "To Do" lists and planning on taking care of getting the parents, Mr. B and the SAT students up to the show, albeit later; Kenton Waddell for spending the week with his crew trying to figure out how to put a "bib" on the tractor; and Karen Menatti for providing breakfast for the chaperones (surely a first)

We hope to see many of you at the next competition at Raven Stadium on October 29. The kids love to see that sea of red cheering for them in the stands (so do the chaperones and the crew).

Although the day was ruined by the rain, the spirits of the kids were high and in the end, we were all winners. They make our job easier. Please let your kids know how great we really think they are! They are "The Pride of Herndon!"

so what does everyone (at least those of us in Wind Ensemble) think about the show for next year?
I thought it was easy and repetitive, but pretty fun to play
I found it interesting that the ballad goes so fast and that the final movement starts off so slow
and finally I think they should put in all the horn pops us thirds came up with ^_^
I can't believe they're going to get rid of the capes though >_< and the white pants

seeing as the shirts will be done tonight (whether they'll have something on the back or not is still questionable) we should decide what day we wish to wear them, I'm in favor of either friday, because that's when all our performances are, or saturday when we're roaming around the park and have awards or whatever

I am more busy than any of you can possibly believe
I have two rehearsals tomorrow and robotics tonight
in between which times I am making shirts
so if someone could come up with a design for the back I would love them forever
you've all seen the front and know the general message desired on the back, it can be condensed for showing sake but I'm going to need it at a full sized
thank you all for your help

ok, I'm _FINALLY_ working on the shirts (I slept til 4 today O:-))
just to check everything I have shirts from: Meredith, Anna, Bert, Buck, Benjy, and myself
I am expecting shirts tommorrow from: Emily, Becca, and Jessica
if I should have a shirt, or if you are planning on bringing a shirt tomorrow _PLEASE_ let me know
thank you ^_^
[Edit] just un update, we're having some... minor difficulties getting the whole transfer process to work on our test shirt, I'll update again when we find and fix the problem
[Edit + 1] ok we have found several things that could be the problem
1) our iron does not get hot enough
2) we have a steam iron that the steam part can not be turned off
if anyone has an older iron please tell me cuz that should fix our problem
[Edit + 2] me and my mom went out got a new iron and a different brand of transfers and everything appears to be nominal ^_^

I should make it the deadline but since I'm a nice guy I'll let people bring in shirts monday at the latest as long as you tell me about it no later than saturday
thank you all ^_^
also is the lack of comment on the shirt front consent? I still need to make the back
due to lack of a good pic it will be all text though and fairly simple

this is an idea I had on the way back from going back to school to pick up buck's shirt he gave me that I sooooo did not leave in the band room after percussion ensemble *shifty guilty eyes*
since this is a spring trip shirt it kind of makes sense but it's far from a complete idea and if it's shot down in favor of becca's that's fine by me
basically on the front have the picture with like "Spring Trip '04"
and then on the back have a picture of bergman either like a silhouette (not sure if that's right) or one that has been humorously photoshopped saying "Spring Trip '05" on top and "Who knows what could be coming at us!" or you know... some less lame phrase I have yet to come up with
[Edit]
an after thought I had almost immediately after posting this is that this idea could also be combined with becca's by having the whole The Berg-Man thing on the front, just another thought ^_^
[Edit + 1]
who else in Wind Ensemble had an awesome time with that song today? ^_^ "GASP!" ^_^

so updates on shirts
they're definately happening ^_^ I have tons of people interested already
so remember bring me a light colored shirt with your name on the tag and when I get everything laid out I'll make them
also is there a certain day we all want to wear it?
at first I was thinking of the wednesday we leave, but we'll be on the bus most of the day
a better option I think would be to wear them that saturday when we're in the warm florida weather and are at the parks all day
but this is assuming we all want to be coordinated for a day so just voice your opinion
[Edit]
we all seem to like becca's idea for a title
do we want a caption also? (i.e. do we want bergman saying anything?)
[Edit + 1]
also it'd be good if we could spread the idea about it in a CONTROLLED manner, I don't know if anyone's told anyone, I'm all for telling other band people, but I don't want it getting out of control, i.e. I don't want any adults (bergman, cunningham, even parents) to know about this and as few people outside of band as possible, cuz if everyone knows aobut it, it won't be as funny ^_^ thanks all

ok, me and my mom have decided we will make bergman shirts
if you supply a white or light colored T-shirt to me with your name on the tag we will do the whole iron on thingy to make your very own The Man T-Shirt

[Edit]
I also need good ideas for a caption and/or title all ideas are welcome, either post or tell me
[Edit + 1]
becca's already put up one idea that I like, but I want everyone to take a look and say what they think about it ^-^
